Kaolin Fire with GUD Issues 0 through 5

kaolin fire presents :: project :: exercise thingamy

bemoaning physical form....

What of a chair that one could use to maintain an aerobic state? ideal for
programming, web browsing, whatever...? If a bicycle can achieve such a thing,
then... what of a unicycle type thing.... a single generator of some sort for
resistance.... pedals... situated such that your knees are unlikely to hit
the desk....

thoughts?
pasi: you're looking for the easy way out, right? or for a way to live your
life entirely at the keyboard?

impractical?
pasi: not at all, but the noise level could induce stress among your fellow
occupants.
shweta: unlikely that people would keep pedalling while reading/typing.
also i think that ut would turn out to be bad for the back. (see bad for
posture question, silly :P)

kdorne: Difficult to think heavily while exercising...

---
Another question, then, for anyone who knows....

what is the fine line between light exercise enough for aerobics and an
actual decrease in performance, if any? Will idle pedaling distract, or
would it take a concerted effort to pedal to distract? Will idle pedaling
aerobicize, or would it take a concerted effort to pedal to do so? :)
---

useful?
pasi: proabably, but i think that an electronic muscle stimulator would be the
easiest way to go.

bad for posture? ;)
pasi: if that prospect is frightening then you should look at attaching a
table (for the keyboard) to an orbitrek or something similar and do your
work while "walking"... Or why not try the linux beer-hike approach to
fitness? (pack the laptop and go hiking ;)
  shweta: um, yeah.
Brandon:
My dfirst thought, being long-legged, is that it would be impossible to
achieve this without redesigning the desk as well, but that's an option of
course. I am sitting at my desk in a somewhat-correct posture and my feet
hit the floor, I cartainly cannot pedal a bicycle.

But of course, it doesn't have to be, errm, bicycular. O But I don't know
wnough about physical therapyu to know what you could do that's aerobic.
